Cuban Neuroscience and the Practice of Neurological Restoration
For more than three decades, Cuba has built an international reputation in neurological restoration — a clinical discipline that combines neuroprotective biotechnology, intensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation, and humanized, family-centered care. At the center of this work is the International Center for Neurological Restoration (CIREN) in Havana, where teams of neurologists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and neuropsychologists work with each patient intensively over multi-week programs rather than in brief, isolated visits.
NeuroCuba exists to bridge this Cuban clinical expertise with international patient care. We coordinate medical evaluation, treatment planning, and travel logistics for families affected by Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, and other neurodegenerative and neurorehabilitative conditions. A defining feature of the Cuban approach is the use of NeuroEPO — marketed as NeuralCIM® — a neuroprotective biotechnology developed on the island and being studied for its potential to support neuronal survival and slow cognitive decline. This is paired with daily, structured rehabilitation that targets movement, cognition, language, and independence in activities of daily living.
For American families, the pathway typically begins with a remote review of medical records, followed by a specialist recommendation and, for eligible patients, an on-site treatment program in Havana. Throughout, NeuroCuba emphasizes transparency, realistic expectations, and continuity of care — including telemedicine follow-up after patients return home. Treatment is delivered in Cuba under the authority of the Ministry of Public Health and Servicios Médicos Cubanos, and outcomes vary by individual. The information on this page is educational and does not constitute medical advice; families should consult their own physicians when considering any international treatment.
Four pillars of the Cuban model
The programs NeuroCuba coordinates are built on four complementary pillars that distinguish Cuban neurological restoration from conventional outpatient care.
Neuroprotective biotechnology
Cuban-developed NeuroEPO (NeuralCIM®) is being studied for its potential to support neuronal survival and slow cognitive decline in neurodegenerative disease.
Intensive neurorehabilitation
Daily, multidisciplinary therapy — physical, occupational, and speech — is delivered by a dedicated team at CIREN, one of the world's leading neurological restoration centers.
Specialist medical evaluation
Each international patient receives a comprehensive neurological assessment, imaging review, and individualized treatment plan before therapy begins.
Humanized, family-centered care
Caregivers are included in education and training, so restoration continues at home after the patient returns from Havana.
Begin with a medical records review
The first step for most international families is a remote evaluation of existing medical records by Cuban neurological specialists.
