NeuroEPO and NeuralCIM®: Cuba's Neuroprotective Biotechnology Explained

Among the distinctive elements of Cuban neurological care is NeuroEPO, a neuroprotective biotechnology developed on the island and administered clinically under the name NeuralCIM®. NeuroEPO is a low-dose, recombinant form of erythropoietin — a protein the body naturally produces — engineered specifically to cross the blood–brain barrier. The standard erythropoietin used in hematology acts on red blood cell production, but NeuroEPO is formulated at a small fraction of that dose so that it acts on neural tissue instead. This distinction is central to why Cuban neurologists have incorporated it into coordinated programs for neurodegenerative disease.

Research into erythropoietin's role in the brain has grown internationally over the past two decades. Preclinical studies and early clinical investigations suggest that erythropoietin receptors present on neurons and glial cells may participate in reducing neuronal apoptosis, modulating neuroinflammation, and supporting neuronal survival in regions vulnerable to neurodegeneration. Cuba's contribution has been to develop a dedicated, low-dose formulation — NeuroEPO — intended to deliver these potential neuroprotective effects while minimizing hematologic side effects. It is studied in connection with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other conditions involving progressive neuronal loss.

Within the programs NeuroCuba coordinates, NeuralCIM® is not delivered in isolation. It forms one component of an intensive, multidisciplinary approach at the International Center for Neurological Restoration (CIREN) in Havana, combined with daily cognitive rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, and neuropsychological support. Each international patient undergoes a comprehensive neurological evaluation, imaging review, and individualized treatment plan before therapy begins. The full program typically spans several weeks on-site, followed by telemedicine follow-up and a home care plan after the patient returns.
